One of the candid  reasons , i see,   is the reduced ability of litter decomposing microbes under mixed litter compared to single species litter. Under mixed species litter , we need a higher diversity of microbes compared to single species litter. There could also be other reasons like ratio of celluloses, and hemicelluloses, lignins, quinones, etc..

 Thanks Meric. Probably , this is also one of the valid reasons , why these  days, multiple inoculation is  more  useful than single inoculation. Microbial consortium exploiting the rhizosphere microbial diversity has become more or less a common feature in studying the plant-microbe synergy , including the plant endophytes..
