Sunlight allows plants, algae, and cyanobacteria to use photosynthesis to convert carbon dioxide and water into organic compounds like carbohydrates. This process is the fundamental source of organic material in the biosphere. Producers are autotrophs, or organisms that produce their own food. Plants and algae are examples of producers. They are at the bottom of the food chain because they are eaten by other organisms, and they don't need to eat for energy.
