I'm reading the laser dynamics book "Light Vol. 2 Laser light dynamics" by Haken. On Page 123 of the book, the coupling constant g is assumed to be real. However, from the definition of g (see enclosed pages), it's hardly reasonable to make the assumption. Does anyone have experience in laser theory and have a clue why such an assumption makes sense? I appreciate any input. Thanks!
