I have recently started studying piezoelectric materials and have found articles that mention they do poling at higher temperatures in oil baths. I was wondering why poling was done in these baths and if there are any other methods to poling.

I think one uses oil bath as oil has a high dielectric strength and can prevent arcing at the surface of the specimen to be poled as one has to apply relatively high electric field to pole the piezoelectric specimen. One can easily control the temperature of the oil bath. The higher temperature may help poling the piezoelectric materials.

Direct face to face poling in an oil bath is done so that pinholes are filled with oil and will not create shorts that burn the material. Corona poling is tolerant of pinholes but requires very high voltages.
If you don't want to use an oil bath, then you can do corona poling.
In corona poling, the equipment is more sophisticated and the voltages are very high. The primary advantage in corona poling is that the process is very tolerant of pinholes and imperfections in the poled material; as a result, the yield is higher.
