Many gardeners believe if they plant rose cutting in a potato, and then plant the cutting together with potatoes in soil, give better results in roots growth. One reason is that the potatoes provide humid conditions for a long time. I would be appreciated if someone could add few other reasons.
I think, one reason can be the carbohydrate resource of potato. For rooting of cuttings, the plant need carbohydrate and some times, few leaves of cuttings are kept for photosynthesis and carbohydrate production. If we put a carbohydrate resource for cuttings, they will be able to attain energy source for root production.

3. I also think that it provides some nutrients for the 'rose cutting' before it can recover its cut and produce its own nutrients. Similarly, when we do plant tissue culture in the labs, we cut a plant stem (for example, tobacco) and stick it into a sterile medium with artificial nutrients (carbohydrate, vitamins,---) for rooting. Nutrients are provided in the medium before its roots come out.
4. Personally, I also think that the potato temporarily provides a cleaner/safer environment for the 'rose cuttings' to grow roots by avoid the cut surface directly contact the soil.

Often in the past a dip in media with heavy smell (manure smearing is an attempt to traslate inzaffardatura) helped rooting, probably by a side production of scatole and indole derivatives. Putting the potato in soil let degradatio to start with a variable delay with potato spruting and vegetation.
