during a large part of the life, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia are at the origin of associated tissues disorders, in veins and arteries, the heart, the brain, lungs, liver and so on, without forgetting growth retardation (insulin is also a growth hormone).
as it is said in google, All humans need insulin to function and live, whether or not their bodies produce it independently. Because you must manage your blood sugar levels (and, as a result, your endocrine system), the condition is considered a disability, regardless of your ability to manage it.
Living with diabetes means taking over the body’s natural ability to regulate blood sugar, a function that usually happens automatically. The constant responsibility places a daily mental and physical burden on people with diabetes, who must carefully monitor their bodies, use medical devices, and manage medications just to stay safe. This qualifies as a metabolic disability, as it limits daily activities and social participation.
People with diabetes must manage not only their health, but also the challenges of accessing care, affording necessary supplies, and integrating these demands into their daily lives.
i can simply put the following reasons as why DM is regarded a disability:
1-Glucose , as fuel required for the energy is not metabolized optimally as in nonrmal people , hence less ATP molecules are produced to maintain the energy requirements .
2-With the progressive rise of HbA1c , an appreciable part of the heamoglobin is not being used to transfer O2 , hence there is going a relative tissues anoxia.
3-Hyperglycemia as such is directly toxic to variuos tissues including heart and skeletal muscles which makes these organs dysfubctional in a sense.
4-The complications that are associated with DM ,[even when controlled ] would add to burden and sufferibg of the patient , espcially ischemic heart diseases ,CKD and neuropathy .These comlications would affect negatively the vitality of the patients and make him feel disabled .
5-Any chronic disease will affect the mood and stamina of the patient . DM is not an exemption .The depressive feeling will translate into loss of energy
and lesser empowerment.
6-DM may be associated with a low grade inflamation which may affect the functionality of major organs .
7-The last but not the least are the direct effects of medicines on the patients well-being through their side effects essentially hypoglycemia .
