Marcelo, interesting question. Certainly, the right answer (if there would be a) would be an "Eldorado" in Social Sciences! However some possible reasons may be applyed. There is a rich literature in different fields that already investigated it. Inequalities are brutal in the region. The elites have no commitment to democracy (see its behavior with Bolsonaro's government). The negative influence of the hegemonic power in the region, backing conservative and even fascist forces...the list dont end...our space yes! We have to see how civil society and institutions will react to the abuses of those in power. But LA is not isoleted in its fragilities. Consolidated democracies have been failng in the USA and Europe. There are other structural reasons that also explain the phenomenon. Best, GR
I understand that we are experiencing a catastrophic draw situation (that based on Gramsci, has been worked by Portantiero -as a hegemonic draw- and García Linera). Just look at the electoral results of the last ten years and it gives in almost all our countries the electorate divided into two halves. In addition, the return of coups should not be forgotten: Honduras (2009), Paraguay (2012), Brazil (2016) and Bolivia (2019). In all these cases, they were not governments that were in a situation of weakness, at least extreme.
Dear Marcelo Eduardo Rojas Vidal the levels of democratic quality in Latin America are affected by the political personalism that, based on its history, is supported by the “economic crisis” factors, which determines the rise of political figures that aim to neutralise democracy and occupy the space of the ideological discussion, placing themselves as the law and the public institutions. Kind regards, Ernani
