This aids in easy formulation approaches without the addition of surfactants and other chemical excipients to enhance the pharmaceutical properties of APIs like stability, solubility etc. A direct impact on bioavailability of API can be made by cocrystallization

Co-crystallization is supposed t indicate that 2 different materials are precipitated together in the same crystal lattice. It can be used for drug and additives (excipients), and here we aim to improve stability and solubility of the drug by precipitating it in amorphous form inside the crystal lattice, or protecting some functional groups such as the case of cycodextrins complexation. And this what usually pharmaceutical industry refer to.

On the other hand, another more interesting application is co-crystals of pharmaceutical additives (excipients) together, at which we improve the characteristics of these additives by combination of 2 different types. We can improve compressibility of the excipient, or disintigration ability, porosity, ....etc.
