Why is a pi-shifted grating usually interrogated using a Pound-drever-Hall lock?

What if a usual interrogation frequency scan is used? I mean the laser used in both cases should have a bandwidth smaller than the pass band so I don't see the advantage of complicating the interrogation scheme except perhaps speed.
