Question 1:Why in special relativity chose Lorentz transformation and Minkowski space? Did they just choose so because they think it's interesting or is there any strict mathematical proof?

Question 2: IN Minkowski space(x,y,z,\sqrt(-1)ct), [since the speed of light ds^2=dx^2+dy^2+dz^2-c^2dt^2=0]. is the fourth dimension that donated as  \sqrt(-1)ct dependent to the other three (x,y,z, ) coordinates? Why introduce the fourth coordinate? Can they just use three coordinate to express the space-time as there was no reason to determine an absolute time scale?
