It isn’t just technology that we use to avoid human contact in public places, we are not only pre-occupied with our cell phones while on trains, buses, or walking on the streets, but we also have our heads often buried in books in public. We seem to plan for meeting other in public by packing a book to read on the train to avoid eye contact and perhaps contact with other. Why do we do this? What does that say about us as people living in the 21st century?
Actually technology helps in keeping contacts with the world. This is a phase where people have become materialistic and more and more earning has become the objective of life. The communication without eye contact has become therefore essential. While doing official work people maintain casual relationship. Progress report of projects located at far off places are read on whats app communication through email including submission of documents have become common. Mobile phones are most common and if you don't use such versatile gadgets, you are thrown.
Even if you do not want to avoid contact with fellow human, you are constrained due to abnormal circumstances and environment both internal as well as external.
This is a sign of the times but it is up to you to decide wether to socialize or use your phone and other devices where it isn‘t appropriat. You can’t blame technology.
Living in huge over-populated cities, liable to constant un-looked for interaction with hundreds of strangers, why should we interact more than we do?

I am scared of some people's smiles too ...No offense, I am pretty conservative .
I do talk to people if they say anything , I prefer little kids and seniors .
In a grocery store - One woman kept saying about how she taught about NAFTA to her 12 year old grand daughter :)
Another story is some people ask - why I pick stuff in the grocery store !

I blame my parents they sent me all over the place with aunts and uncles whom I did not know , this probably made me develop- speak when asked attitude ...
Technology is slowly taking over our humanity from us. About 20 years ago I used to frown upon my children when they engaged on the phone while we were on the table. about 8 years ago, i joined him and now my wife has joines together with our little daughter and it is now the norrm in our house.
it is better to be busy in your phone or read book during traveling rather than starring or useless talk with others.
I met some amazing people while traveling that revealed some of the best qualities that humanity has to offer. Talking to people isn’t a waste of time.
Technology definitely plays a part, but my personal view is that nowadays, especially in cities, where it is overpopulated and has a high rate of mobility, people tend to avoid deep contact with each other, this trend is generally true throughout the world. My memory of being grown up in a small mountainous village is very different, where everyone knows each other and more communication is carried out on a daily basis. Other factors also contribute, such as personality, willingness to communicate, fear, etc.

I will still blame everything on Technology. I can get all required information and just anything online without having physically contact with anyone and so on. All thanks to technology. So why do I need to speak with the other person....
Everyday I perform journey of about 35 minutes in underground metro rail to reach my office. During the whole journey, I find only 4-5 people without using cell phones in the super pact compartment!
People are using it in standing condition in such a crowded area!
I spend a good portion of my life in rural areas. I do not feel so much attraction for cellphone perhaps due to that reason.
As per my idea, we are becoming friendless and lonely for that habit.
Gossiping has some soothing effects on our mind, I feel.
As an academic, vociferously and exhaustively well-read, like many here, I struggle with most people's conversations. People coming up to me unasked, is surely an imposition? Although I am kind and courteous to all, why should I accommodate all in this unjustifiably democratic fashion? Many people, I cannot simply get on with. I have enough friends, etc, thank you!
I think also that there is a great difference between the people in your own immediate locality wanting your attention and those abroad, those met when travelling, as the latter will give you information you may otherwise not have received. But, don't stay around. This sense of novelty will clearly not continue.
In my country, Ethiopia, social relationship is very strong, which is completely different where I am living now, South Korea.
I am following the questions to know more about the situations in other countries.
There are many factors that led to this, such as, social media web sites
and some times the long labor hours restrict this type of communication.
I must say, I've learnt a tremendous amount from my foreign (not UK) students both here and abroad. Seeming differences in temperament through cultural differences, and providing overall a chance to evaluate my own ideas as well as others. I am lucky to have taught a wide range of nationalities, many from Eastern Europe, Asia, as far as Korea and Japan, and, of course, lived in Africa and taught there.
When there is mutual respect you do like to communicate.
But today there is a big gap....both financially and mentally

Having said that we should certainly retain the most important thing.......being human....to laugh.....to talk.....to react.....
The era of scientific progress and social media can always be blamed, but we have become dependent on rigorous scientific research, waiting for promotion, publication, modernization, addicted to work, as if the time machine has stopped, we pay an additional tax for welfare and its deceptive age, from our health and our true contact with our friends...
I agree with Dr. Murthy; he has given a candid justification of the work.
Personally, I always smile and try to be friendly to people in stores, at the university, in village, or at the university. However, I think people are either too busy with work prep, too selfish, too preoccupied with technology or afraid of people because of the shootings and terrorism they hear in the news. I also think smartphones and Facebook do not help this issue.

The two sides of the same coin , Technology, which reduced family conflicts, created a kind of autonomy for individuals in their interests, obscured alienation and played a key role in bringing peoples closer together and spreading cultures, but directly contributed to family separation and lack of dialogue, resulting in "social isolation".
The man who invented mobile devices and computer boards to facilitate his life, contributed in turn to the complexity through addiction to use, and thus in the creation of diseases and social problems contributed to the divergence and disintegration of community relations.
As part of the signs to mark our times, a biblical prophecy said that the love of people will grow cold. Selfishness and me-first attitude marks our time.
In addition, due to the high lawlessness, people fear talking and exposing privacy to unknown persons or strangers they meet in the public space.
Its also possible that addiction to technological devices have 'stolen' all our time for public socialization.
We interact with people on our phone yet we ignore them when they are physically present. Technology is a contributing factor.
(1) - The group that have been born in high tech. era, and do not know much about the community-life, inter-generational communication, and learning from higher above ages (trust to former generation's non-electronic knowledge). (2) - A group that is the mentioned older-group, amazed, confused, and waiting for a miracle, specially in individualistic Western culture to see a change toward the natural need of human, which is created as a group, not isolated in different houses, nursing home (stress & depression). (3) - a group in-between the two aboves: they have to work, work, without having time , energy to be a bridge between these two, to enjoy living rather than working more than one jobs, just be able to pay the bills (middle- class). Generally, living in current isolation, does not always push people to go out, and keep shopping to make corporation rich, because they can not afford, and material can not be equal to positivity of human-communications.
I think that we can response this question apart on the basis of the own experience. For me, personally, it is sometimes difficult to communicate wiht persons that are not able to express their basic feelings. That´s why, in a train or in a plane, I prefer reading a book to participate on conversations that I am not able to understand from the human point of view. Short phrases, without feeling, without ideas, without logic.... Maybe it is the consequence of all the electronic advantages.
We have to blame the improper usage of new technologies like smartphone gadgets, social media and etc can be one of the factors.
On the tube-London Underground, which I use each day.
Constant sniffing and snorting from all around me. People sneezing without putting hand of handkerchief before their noses. People cracking their fingers (ugh), popping gum, feet in the aisle or feet on seats.
Young woman in argument with older man, accusing him of digging his elbows into her on purpose. She got up and went to another seat. He abused her. She abused him.
Going home. Beggars roaming up and down asking for money-stories seem rehearsed and always the same. I give when I can. Stared at-look away. Take off my glasses when it happens too often.
People's schedules are so busy now because of many activities that were not available to the larger public in the past. It's hard to find time and place to read a book or even find a moment of solitude to do a bit of creative writing or thinking.
