Dear Friends, a few months ago I wrote a post against use of Enrofloxacin as preservative in Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Vaccine (An Anti-National Act of Dr. Gaya Prasad Committee: Enrofloxacin Addition in FMD vaccine is legal and with no undesirable effects) (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/303685698_Use_of_Enrofloxacin_as_Preservative_in_FMD_vaccine) Now you may see in the recently released “National Treatment Guidelines for Antimicrobial Use in Infectious Diseases” Version 1.0 (2016) by NATIONAL CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL, Directorate General of Health Services Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India (http://www.ncdc.gov.in/writereaddata/linkimages/AMR_guideline7001495889.pdf). It classifies enrofloxacin (ciprofloxacin) (Ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin are of the same group with similar structure, toxicity etc.) as an Alert Antibiotic. It reads at page 37,
Alert Antimicrobials: To Prevent and Control the Emergence and Spread of Antimicrobial-Resistant Micro-organisms in Hospitals” one major strategic goal is to “define guidelines for use of key antibiotics”, (“Alert” antibiotics) targeted in these guidelines are ciprofloxacin, ---, --, ---------------------, ertapenem and newer preparations of amphotericin.
Collectively, these are among the drugs most frequently prescribed irrationally which is largely responsible for the current escalation of antibiotic costs. ----------------------. It is critical, therefore, that these Alert antibiotics be prescribed only on the recommendation of senior medical staff or after discussion with the on-call Clinical Microbiologist or ID physician.
However, Dr. Gaya Prasad Committee supported the use of enrofloxacin as preservative in FMD vaccine to be used in milch animals without thinking the outcome and fate of future generations of India. And there is no one to question, why?
