First, I have teenagers and children with this condition, which; second, let's call it by its real name - 'Insulin Resistance'. All the 'symptoms' and 'signs' of "metabolic syndrome" are because the body's cells are becoming resistant to insulin, forcing the pancreas to produce more insulin - that causes all the problems. We could call it hyperinsulemia
To the question very fittingly the earlier article of Barzilai et al. (2012), here it is called immediately in the introduction “The metabolic syndrome of aging”:
Barzilai N, Huffman DM, Muzumdar RH, Bartke A. The critical role of metabolic pathways in aging. Diabetes 2012;61(6):1315-22. http://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org/content/diabetes/61/6/1315.full.pdf
The question is that the metabolic syndrome is a complex disorder, influenced by multicausal conditions, represented by a set of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, and, although prevalent in the elderly, may occur in individuals from other age ranges, not only in the elderly.
i feel we link metabolic syndrome with underlying insulin resistance, which i guess is again not correct. The suggested name may be "insulin resistance syndrome".
However, the concept of "common soil hypothesis" needs to be revised in the light of new molecular evidence
