The United States support Israel because it is their main strategic partner in the Middle East. Another factor to consider is that, if Palestinians had also created a state in 1948 according to the UN decision, most probably there wouldn't be an "occupation issue" nowadays. Moreover, the US and the European Union (EU) have characterised Hamas as a terrorist organisation. This justifies their support to Israel.
Americans sympathize with Israel, but pro-Palestinian voices are getting louder in the US, and sharp divisions are visible in Congress and universities.
President Joe Biden doesn't have an easy task. On the one hand, the majority of society expects him to support Israel politically and condemn anti-Semitic crimes. On the other hand, the president must take into account the voices and sensitivity of the rapidly growing Muslim community in America. According to the CIA Factbook (as of November 1, 2023, see: https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/united-states/#people-and-society), Jews constitute approximately 1.9 percent United States population, Muslims 0.9 percent.
According to the Institute for Palestinian Studies, there are few people of Palestinian origin in the USA, between 150,000 and 150,000. and 250 thousand, which is only about 10 percent (see: https://oldwebsite.palestine-studies.org/jps/fulltext/39401) of Muslim community in the USA.
Still, both Jews and Muslims are an important constituency for President Biden. They vote overwhelmingly for Democrats in the US.
It is estimated that as many as three-quarters of Jews chose the democratic party in the 2022 parliamentary elections.
This is despite the fact that Republicans are traditionally considered more pro-Israel, more involved in military aid for Israel, more understanding of violations of Palestinian rights and usually more courageous in supporting the government of Benjamin Netanyahu.
President Biden is not a statesman but a career politician whose concerns do not extend beyond the next election. Policy is clumsily designed to avoid alienating either group but shows US as a weak supplicant to both and to regional nations.
What will happen with US support for Israel in 2024? In my opinion some Israeli ideas like for example Palestinian migration to Saudi Arabia or Democratic Republic of Congo - https://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-in-talks-with-congo-and-other-countries-on-gaza-voluntary-migration-plan/ - will help Biden's Administration to finish this support.
I've no knowledge other than noting the "legend" is repeated in one form or another in a number of scholarly books with comments that it was considered and abandoned.
