While doing research on human photoreceptors, I found this question is particularly counter-intuitive. Someone on the reddit thought it maybe just a evolutionary relic, if so, there must be some evidence on the trace. If not, what do we benefit from this cell behaviour?

It really looks like a relic. In invertebrates that acquired vision through a different evolutionary path, photoreceptors apparently depolarize in light. https://doi.org/10.1016/1011-1344(94)06993-X
