In Hubel's book the eye and many other publications, it was confirmed that V1 layer 4 mainly contained (among others) simple cells that are sensitive to oriented edges appearing at certain location in the visual field .
Why then does stimulation of this layer gives rise to bright spots and not oriented edges/lines?
You assume the simple cells themselves generate the percepts. It may be the case that the percepts are generated in upper levels where the simple cels send their outputs. Since you cannot isolate the inputs to the cells which generate the percepts only to include the artificially stimulated simple cells, the bright spots would result.

Hi Gehan, Vision-Space may provide some interest? To answer these question we need to study the phenomenon of vision AS VISION. There are no 'lines' or 'edges' until we conceive of them from what occurs to us. The ontology in incorrect and adversely affects what we think about vision and hence what we stimulate our visual system with. Presentation list attached but these two may be most relevant?

I also think that stimulation's lack of focality may be delivering contradictory information to the brain hindering perception. For example, you may be simultaneously activating a combination of neurons that the brain does not expect to be activated together..
