I have been teaching only seven years, but it has been a dream come true for me. This is my third and probably last career as I'm not 63 years old. I often hear younger academics speak of the teaching part of the job as something they would rather escape so that they have more time for their research. With all of the external rewards associated with research, I suppose that is understandable.
But to me, the teaching is intrinsically motivating. I chose to teach undergraduates because they are more ready to learn than graduate students. There is nothing more fulfilling than watching them learn how to think, to develop their own capacities to learn, and to see them embrace the ethics and values of my profession (social work).
I give all three aspect of the job serious time and effort - teaching, research, and service - but teaching is the part that keeps me going. I simply love it.
Notably, different people have different reasons for teaching. On the face of it, teaching is a process aimed at satisfying students' needs through human interventions helping them learn specific kinds of knowledge, information and skills. However, the participation of the teachers as knowers in shaping and developing learners' knowing by contributing to their understanding and general education has long been under scrutiny and criticism. Insights gleaned from the literature provided by professor Kumaravadivelu (2012) reveals that such a role clearly undermines the true responsibilities of a teacher. Mere transformation of knowledge along the theoretical and practical lines set by circles of power and domination is not enough. As such, I tried to change my professional stance by adopting the teachings of professor Kumara and following the teaching principles of post-modern era where teachers' constant professional development should be directed towards critical pedagogy. In this type of instruction, all groups of learners have their particular needs defined by the local standards and the role of the teacher is to help them think critically and monitor their own learning practices . I strongly believe that teachers' role today is certainly influenced by the demands of global education where social diversity and equal opportunities for all are its dominant factors.
