Why do people spending a lot of money for buying orchid? What are the characteristics of beautiful or characteristics of marketable orchids?

I think that many people find the flowers of orchids really beautiful, wonderful, due to their attractive colours and shape. On the other hand, their pollination systems are, in many cases, very interesting. Humans tend to make collections of live or dead animals and plants, and orchids are between the best plants to have at home, naturally, in good conditions of light and humidity, depending on the species. I am an orchid fan, but I only collect photos in the field, not live plants, as some of the orchids of the Canaries (where I live) are endangered and protected by law. I am interested in the species from the Mediterranean region and the Mid-Atlantic or Macaronesian archipelagos...
