Some trees are shedding their bark via so called exfoliating process. We have observed it in several Juglandaceae (Oreomunnea, Carya, etc.) as well as in Zelkova (Ulmaceae). See the pictures.
Are there any reviews and/or compilation papers on this phenomenon?
I have found at least three theories/explanations:
- Exfoliating may have a protective function preventing a build-up of parasites, fungi, lichens, epiphytes, etc. (tropical regions)
- Peeling of bark may allow the removal of lichen light-blocking layer to expose the live inner bark (to photosynthesis in certain species: Betula).
- Exfoliating allows a higher amount of gas exchange and transpiration to occur (some Betula species).
