Sexologists focus on presenting female sexual anatomy as evidence for female orgasm. The thinking is that if women have sexual anatomy (such as the clitoris that is clearly the equivalent of the penis) then they must be as capable of orgasm as men are. They do not look for evidence from the general population because this kind of research (based on asking women in the population to confirm beliefs about female orgasm) in the past have not yielded the hoped for confirmation of male fantasies.
