This question is too broad to answer. Adding nano particles into the polymer resin does not necessarily increase the tensile strength. It depends on what nano particles and their properties, dispersion, interface, compatibility, concentration, etc. Sometimes it may decline.

In general, the mechanical properties of polymer/nanoparticles composites are controlled by several microstructural parameters such as properties of the matrix, properties and distribution of the filler as well as interfacial bonding, and by the processing methods. Thus, the interfaces may affect the effectiveness of load transfer from the polymer matrix to nanoparticles. Therefore, surface modification of nanoparticles is needed to promote better dispersion of fillers and to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the matrix and nanoparticles.

Nano particles can actually improve the strength of polymer matrix composites due to synergy of load transfer from the matrix to reinforcement particles. However, the nano particles must be well dispersed in the matrix before this strengthening mechanism can be exploited.

Since the question is confined to the possibility of increased tensile strength only, the possible explanation could be arising from the increased interfacial adhesion between the polymer matrix and uniformly dispersed filler nanoparticles.
The increase in the tensile strength of the polymer resin is due to the transfer of loading to the (stronger) nano-particles. Virtually, the nano-particles bear most of the load than the polymer (resin) matrix. Compared to 100% polymer (without nano-particles strengthener) of course, the one with homogeneously distributed nano particles has stronger tensile strength. However, as already pointed up by others, the inter-facial adhesion between polymer matrix and the nano particles is very crucial, as weak adhesion will lead to the failure of loading transfer.
There are several types of reinforcement mechanisms! You should better specify the type of matrix, and the type of filler. I mean their nature and their shape (at micro/nano level). Take a look at my publications.

The incerease in the tensile strength of the polymer resin is due to the nano-particles have large surface areas, which makes them to be chemically very active and helps them to bond with the matrix. Their inclusion into the polymer matrices can effectively enhance the properties of the matrix, such as: flexural modulus (FM) without losing flexural strength (FS), tensile modulus (TM), tensile strength (TS), fracture toughness (FT) and impact energy (IPE). These improvements depend strongly on the filler volume content and on the type and characteristics of the nano-particles.

Therefore, the strong interfacial interaction between the organic and inorganic phases creates a high impact on the properties of the polymer nanocomposites. A variety of nanoparticles have been utilized for the development of polymer nanocomposites, which result in materials with improved electrical, rheological, mechanical and tribological behaviors.
