The Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem because of his loss and failure to conquer Egypt. He wanted to compensate for this through wars against the states under his control. In 601 BC, the fourth year of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, tried to conquer Egypt and failed. The Levant was subordinate to him, including the kingdom of Judea, whose king Jehoiakim stopped paying tribute to Nebuchadnezzar. According to the Babylonian Chronicle, Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem and fell on March 2, 587 BC. Nebuchadnezzar took out the possessions of Jerusalem and all the treasures of the temple. The new king, his entourage and the dignitaries, with a large section of the kingdom's population of up to ten thousand, denied them to Ezekiel and Daniel.
