Why coating nanoparticles with citric acid decreases the specific surface area?

I coated niobium pentoxide nanoparticles by citric acid, the surface area went from 300 m2/g to 173 m2/g? Can someone explain to me the reason ?

Nanoparticles typically obtain their high material surface areas by inter-particle void spaces. The addition of a coating species partially fills and/or obstructs these void spaces, resulting in a diminished surface area accessible by micromeretics (Assuming that's what you're using to measure surface area).
