A person can get the Nobel Prize in peace and economics, but not in computer science. Why? However we are living on the edge of computer science and this science stream is responsible for our rapid growth in modern sciences.
Because computers wasn't invented at the time Alfred Nobel created the prizes.
Since computers can solve many problems you can choose to aim for the prize by solving a great problem in economics, mathematics etc.
Sorry but I don't believe that any other award is as prestigious as Nobel.

In computer Sciences the Turing Prize is the equivalent to the Nobel Prize.
Piotr, I have not heard of Turning prize before reading these answers. You are right people know Nobel Prize and most scientists wish for it. What about computer scientist? They cannot even wish for it. Is it fair for them? Are physicist taking the credit?

For computer science, Turing Award is available (this is known as nobel prize of computer science).
The award amount is US $250,000.
Last year i met Prof. Joseph Sifakis (Turing Award 2007).
Nobel Prize or Turing Award, I think our main aim should be to create more solutions to the world problems. History will always remember us for that. Although it may look partial but at least there is an equivalent prize.Just like what Vitaly said, as we continue to do more in our area of specialization, Nobel Prize will not be as usual
