The basic purpose of artificial recharge of ground water is to restore supplies from aquifers depleted due to excessive ground water extraction/ exploitation/ use.

Artificial recharge techniques helps in the enhancement of the yield of aquifer, conservation and storage of excess surface water, improvement of the quality of existing ground water, removing of bacteriological and other impurities from sewage and waste water

Artificial recharge (also known as aquifer re-injection) is the process of injecting (or recharging) water into the ground in a controlled way, by means of special recharge wells. The water is pumped from the dewatering system and then piped to the recharge location, which may be a considerable distance away, where the water is injected back into the ground. Water may have to the treated prior to recharge, to reduce the risk of clogging of recharge wells.

Artificial recharge may be carried out for various purposes:

To ensure that ground settlements caused by drawdown are small, this reducing the risk of damage to nearby structures.

To avoid depletion of water resources when dewatering is carried out in aquifers used for water supply.

To reduce environmental impacts on sensitive water-dependent features such as wetlands.

Artificial recharge makes water healthy by keeping it away from biological contamination and adding important minerals.

Hello professors, In this concept i have a question on what is the use on direct injecting excess water through wells or any other methods in to ground water if the inflow is less than outflow (if the water will never stay at that particular position). How about designing underground mini reservoir and store the water there itself and connected with pipelines to nearest agricultural fields and supply water directly to the roots Instead of using surface irrigation techniques like flood irrigation and Sprinkle irrigation, etc... Because higher percentage of water in surface reservoir is used for irrigation in countries like India I hope by this way of approach we can conserve surface and ground water at a time.
