There is no need for breakthroughs. Science evolves, it does not spring, like Aphrodite, fully formed from the spume.
Science is a ‘search for the truth’ not 'the possession of it’
It is unethical to report incremental advances as breakthroughs
It is unethical to report scientific scepticism as fact
It is unethical to report dogma as an alternative to real science
When I taught science journalism students were advised to be wary of 'breakthroughs'. If reporting on such a story they were told they had to be far more vigilant about the claims, the sources and the potential motives behind the story.
