You are what and how you eat. A variety of foods and cooked foods can cause several chronic diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and so on , however, health foods can prevent and health those diseases and sickness.
Because in the west it is not a part of the curriculum. They have no knowledge and as it has not been taught to them, they do not consider it even remotely possible that it could have a consequence on disease. Sad but true. We need a paradigm shift and this has to come through education.
I have no idea. In Spain the Uni. Nutrition degree is in place as an official degree since 1998.
Until then, psysicians and nurses used to do all nutrition tasks.
Despite the incorporation of Human Nutrition and Dietetics degree, Nutritionists in Spain are not yet included in Public Health.
Our tasks are performed bt physicians and nurses, despite law stablish that they can not perform Nutritionists tasks anymore, as Nutritionists exists.
Some physicians associations have even asked to incorporate Nutritionists ASAP as they lack on that knowledge and need help. They have not been listened.
Spain is probably the only european country who has not Nutritionists neither Dietitians working on Public Health, and only a couple of big hospitals count with them.
The Ministry of Public Health is responsible for nutrition in population. The academics and researchers in university have to work harder then. I hope that nutrition and dietetics in Spain will one day be better.
In the UK nutritional status in hospital is most often assessed by nurses checking people are not underweight. There is very little recognition that people could be overweight or normal weight and yet be low in a range of nutrients, especially the elderly.
Hi Eliz: The problem in modern world in people who are overweight. How is it in UK? Who take care or educate them? You said they are rarely recognized , it seems that this in not the problem?
The reasons are obvious. If one is a clinician one has to provide services that appear among the "allowable" (reimbursable) ICD-10 service codes or you do not get paid.
A core law of behavior is that the frequency of occurrence of any behavior that goes unreinforced will, under similar circumstances in the future, decrease in frequency of occurrence.
