I am discussing the replacement of an AISI 304 component with AISI 430 after the 304 component had suffered Cl-SCC in chloride containing milieu at around 100 ºC. Researching the properties of 400-grade stainless steels, I am puzzled why these steels have superior Cl-SCC resistance with respect to 300-grade steels. Does anyone have an explanation for this?
