We have gotten really good yields using RNAzol when blood was stored in PaxGene RNA tubes but less so (read not at all) when stored in more standard collection tubes or collected as PBMCs.

We've gotten pretty good results with Ambion Ribopure blood kit.

However, the method is slightly more tedious and cannot be automated.

In my experience using Paxgene RNA tubes + extraction kit is really good combination to get better yield and quality. But in case your blood is compromised or from old-patient that can explain why you get so low values.
