Why was the technical grade of chlorantraniliprole used and not the formulated product? What was the rational/justification for testing the technical grade?
I was asked this question during the revision of my manuscript. I what to know the rationals to justify this statement. My justification was, “Because we want to assess the toxicity of a specific chemical, while in the formulated pesticides active ingredient is accompanied by an inert material which usually also cause synergism. Technical grade powder of pesticide is used to confront this problem”. How much are you agree with this justification?

Since most pesticides are poorly soluble in water, they are formulated with solvent aids which produce very fine emulsions when added to water. These adjuvants in a formulated product, however, may alter the toxicity of the active ingredient. Therefore, the formulations may be substantially more toxic than the active ingredient (AI). The increased toxicity is certainly NOT due to the AI but due to the type of formulation, or toxic adjuvants. Since formulations typically persist only for a limited time after entering the aquatic environment, and since soil passage separates the adjuvants from the AI, it makes sense that only AI toxicity is tested to avoid overestimation of toxicity.

Testing toxicity of the Active Substance (a.s.) is part of the assessment process of the plant protection products. However, the formulation is spread in the environment; therefore, it is the formulated product that should be tested for the use as a good rule.
There is an example of toxic co-formulant that was used for long time, just because that simple rule was not applied.
