It may sound like a truism, but historians write the history of nations. I noticed that while George W. Bush and Barack Obama were (and the latter still is) serving as U.S. President, internationally renowned political historians were and are ranking them by number among all others who served in the office. Presidents worry about their "legacies" by leaving their libraries and personal effects to universities. Why? Because they want historians to write about them, and historians are usually associated with universities in the U.S. Take away historiographers, and nobody makes history.

Victors write the histories; sometimes a superb scientist may write a text that becomes a sort of "history" of a scientific investigation. Murray Gel-Mann, who discovered and named the "quarks" has written a wonderful text "The Jaguar and the Quark" (I think I have the title right). Einstein, Hawking have both written extensively for what may become a history of the investigation of black holes and other singular phenomena. But when it comes to what we usually mean by "history," that is in the hands of a nation's primary historians. Back in the early feminist days of the 1970s, we used to joke that we knew it was men who wrote the history because the name is "his story"; we wanted "her story" to offset the clear bias of the male historian. The same facts seem true for most nations of the Middle East--the dominant historians for centuries have been the "colonizers" who have a perspective rarely that of the nations whom they colonized. In the U .S., standard American history rarely spoke honestly of the arrival of the Puritans and Pilgrims and their devastating impact on the Native American Indians. One reason that Howard Zinn is such a fabulous American historian is that he tells the truth--pretty much unvarnished. African-American history was unheard of in predominantly white universities and it is still a fairly new subject or program in many universities across the nation. Since victors have power, I would say that history (not to mention most economics, policies, political parties, and a host of other realms) are in the hands of the powerful, who happen in the U.S. to be those with unimaginable wealth.

I think the question does metaphorically point, not to historians as those who write history (in this case the answer would be a historian writes history), but those history writers who serve the greater purpose of the establishment...

I tend to agree with Aysha Bey. Victors (by themselves if they have the skill to write or by their authorized writers) write the history of nations. In the ancient times, the reign of victors are long, so their history also takes long before they are re-written.
