All of us have the responsibility in one way or the other towards the reduction and possible eradication of the climate change canker. We must all ensure that collectively we fight against it by making sure that we engage in environmentally friendly activities that make the earth smile.

However, the big players in the world's affairs who make the major decisions and formulate the policies governing societal, national and international development affairs must put the banner against climate change at the top of their priority areas of development. We must intensify education that climate change if left to exacerbate, would swallow all life on the beautiful planet. The decisive steps must be taken now or never. The responsibilities for climate change fall on many shoulders, of course — from individuals through the daily choices we make, to emitting industries, to nations. But some are more responsible than others. One of the perennial debates around global warming has to do with the role of individual choices. What responsibilities do individuals have to fight climate change? Are people who advocate for political action on climate change hypocrites if they drive to work, fly to climate conferences, or have three children?

A new study has pushed that debate back to the forefront and, perhaps inadvertently, demonstrated why it is so goofy.

The study, from researchers in Sweden and British Columbia, analyzes 148 separate individual actions available to citizens of the developed world and, drawing on 39 different sources, attempts to calculate their carbon impact. This pretty infographic is the result:

We are all responsible, in the daily decisions we make. And if we were all more universally concerned, policymakers would find it easier to create helpful policies, and appliance makers would be more incentivized to design appropriately efficient and clean appliances (I'm including any energy-consuming appliance here).

The problem is that as consumers, we say one thing, but do exactly the opposite. We claim to be concerned, but then we buy whatever we like best, usually without a second thought. Or, we do not hesitate before driving, without a second thought about combining trips, sharing rides, or taking public transportation. It's too easy to just blame Exxon. Who buys their product?

Being poor helps, but not entirely. It helps because if you are poor, you cannot afford to create a large carbon footprint. It's not an option. But at the same time, just one example, deforestation is a phenomenon that continues to occur today, in poorer countries, and it is a huge part of the problem. We are still simultaneously dumping more CO2 into the atmosphere, and in the aggregate, destroying the natural mechanism that sequesters it! How is that right?

I think that given the option, the average person acts just as irresponsibly as the next guy. That's the shame of it.

Outstanding comment, I do agree with you. Before about more than one year, I started with very limited abilities, all my lectures for engineering students for not more than 10 minutes, explaining about this problem(s) and what is our role or contribution to create difference in whole situation, and as volunteering work, begin to maximize the green zones in our college, reducing power consumption, adding posters that stimulate others to be positive and hope to spread these small entrepreneurship over the world and get support from international societies.

All of us are responsible, more or less, directly on indirectly, for both climate change and climate change reduction. I think that education has a long term role in reduction of climate changes. 

We should always raise awareness about this emmerging problem of today!

Thank you very much for your very professional interaction, Really I started with my student with very limited abilities before about one year by maximizing the green zones not only at our college but at homes, public area, other zones, and reducing power consumption, depending on pure natural resources, reducing of using cars, encouraging other to use bicycles, ... and now we hope to extend our activities and participate in an international entrepreneurship.

Let us rise a new logo of GREEN EARTH COVERED BY BLUE SKY.
