the term “nanocomposite” first appeared in the literature in 1986. The first online articles dealth with ceramics and magnetic composites. The first polymer nanocomposites were being discussed around 1992. Almost everything published from 1986 is on line, while older investigations often are not….

Peter Lerner That' pretty easy to do. A simple search on Google Scholar immediately pulls this up from 2000:

Custom searches on Google Scholar pick up material from 1986 onward, so I'm sure that Pierluigi Traverso above is correct.

Dear Pierluigi--my question was not who first created nanocomposites (probably, the Hittites or even Hattians), or who first coined the linguistic term, but who first used it in a peer-reviewed scientific publication. Your date of 1986 seems approximately correct.
