I am interested in the use of mobile apps to present environmental data and scientific findings to the public but first I want to know if anyone has developed methods to evaluate knowledge transfer and engagement via mobile apps. I'm familiar with Discipline Based Education Research (DBER) but my cursory internet search didn't find any such evaluations of mobile apps. I hope to use results of previous studies, if they exist, to guide app development to maximize chances of success. Thanks in advance!

Dan, I would suggest avoiding, or at least minimising scientific theory, and sticking to common sense and good practice. There are countless examples of how to design products from a business and manufacturing perspective (lots of theory on this as well), particularly app development. It depends on who you would like connect to, as your user (market). What is the purpose of connecting to a group of people, or users? Would you like to create a value-added product from your science? Who would be interested and how would this product help them making decisions (of going swimming, surfing, or supporting infrastructure development for marine industry etc). What are your expectations? You refer to "chance of success", what does this mean? Why do you want to present "environmental data and scientific findings" to the public? Are you looking to develop a Decision Support System (lots of theory on this), or are you hoping to do a Windguru style app for public information. Too many questions! I don't understand the context and it sounds like science theory should be replaced with practices that makes people want to pay money for a service...even if you don't actually charge anything.
Then, of course, there is a growing mountain of work on co-design...especially co-design of science-based tools...
