I am living in a small district. The district has a population of 10.000. There is a sensitive area, a conservation area and a national park in the district. There are also thermal hotels in the district. Which wastewater treatment system would you recommend for the district? and Why?
According to the description of this area, I suggest that the best option would be aerobic biofilter systems followed by anaerobic filters. This is because they have a good efficiency removal of organic matter and also of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen. In addition to being much cheaper than conventional systems and requires less area for construction.
Three main criteria to choose a technology are 1) budget 2)size 3) operation mode. If the city has enough money them membrane bioreactor is the best option. If the budget is limited then extended aeration. If the size of the reactor needs to be small then biofilm technologies are the best. The lowest operational intensive technology is lagoons that are not ideal for nutrient removal.
I suggest anaerobic treatment of wastewater for your district. This technology would be great, as this treatment process requires less energy and also produces less sludge. Again, it would be beneficial for the less populated area as the technology requires less maintenance compared to other treatment processes.
Anaerobic filter but it depends upon many factors like cost, operation, area etc.
