The choice of catalyst depends more on the process chemistry's chemical transformation requirement although there are certain inhibitions/restrictions as to which catalysts one can use! Pressure based catalyst are not feasible in manufacturing units and so are the highly hygroscopic or special assembly need catalysts or for that matter  the catalysis  by highly reactive metal  like Na-NH3 etc. Transfer hydrogenations are  good to deal.
