In short: dilute and shoot. You will filter the sample only if necessary, and then a 0.45 um filter is enough, even to remove bacteria. 0.22 um, often applied, is a kind of overshooting. Often said to remove bacteria, proof data shows that membrane filters with 0.45um will do the job, w/o clogging as fast as the 0.23um filters do.
