I am planning to assess the impacts of climatic (rainfall, temperature, snow cover) and non-climatic (human and livestock population) factors to vegetation cover in a river basin in Nepal. I saw few papers, some are using PCA and some partial correlation method for identifying the relations? Any suggestions?
I consider that you can try a multiple regression analysis. PCA is for reducing the number of factors.
For the temperature indices recommended by the ETCCDI can be useful. Definitions can be found at http://cccma.seos.uvic.ca/ETCCDI/list 27 indices.shtml).
I consider the use of Principal Component Analysis as a more appropriate approach to determine the main factors in a complex interwoven dynamics of rainfall, so as to produce results that show that relationships are not simple and linear.
