Increasingly R is being used in statistical classes. What is the experience elsewhere? I have been a little disappointed with first year students' spreadsheet skills and even their interest in statistic and quantitative skills, despite it giving them an obvious advantage in their future career.
SPSS is the widely used software at graduate level. Due to easy user interface, SPSS fulfill all needs of a researcher for different kinds of basic and advanced statistical analysis.
When I was postgraduate in 2012 at Agrocampus Ouest (Rennes, France), R was the main statistical software used. But for sure, most of the postgraduate students were not really interested in the statistics and quantitative skills as you put it. They often over estimated the math skills requirement and give up without giving it a try and classify it into the "nerd" category ...
We use SPSS in our institution (EBC Hochschule Hamburg, Univ. of Applied Sc.). We're planning to introduce R but there's only one expert inhouse available. I do use SPSS for numerous courses starting from the 2nd semester, no one can avoid it... Every student at Bachelor's level must be able do simple calculations like descriptives, bivariate corr., mean differences and a simple linear regression. Plus everyone must be able to interpret outputs correctly. Easy if you combine it with important stuff from a stuedent's point of view (give them projects they're interested in). Kind Regards,

We use SPSS at Ibmec (a Brazilian undergraduate and graduate school)
In our College of Education SPSS is often used. In our Department of Statistics we use Minitab or Minitab Express for our introductory courses and R or SAS for upper-level courses.
Some majors here, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, use SPSS since it is the simplest application, meanwhile some others still teach statistics in a traditional way.
I'm intro classes I've added using excel and Google sheels to do some sime stat analysis.
We use Stata for quantitative dat analysis at the University of Pittsburgh. As I know, compared to other softwares, Stata is much better in terms of faster speed of processing mega-data and more functions. One weak point I don't like much about this is its interface which is harder to apply and it requires us to memorize the commands to enter. Anyway, google can help to cope with this short-coming.
None in particular, is not an 'institutional' decision but a teacher's decision. I've heard about SPSS in bachelors, whereas in master and phd are using also Matlab, and Statgraphics, and very recently, some are introducing R
For Quantitative, SPSS was recommended by Keiser University; for qualitative, many students use Qualtrics.
Here most of the coaching is on SPSS. However, it is not the decision of the university, so some few students especially graduates may have supervisors who may be comfortable with other programmes especially stata hence be required to learn it.

NCTE National Council for Teacher Education adopted certain software for analysis and interpretations
We used R project, SPSS, SmartPLS and LIREL.
R Project is great! for students early stages of the statiscal kowinledge i recommend the "R commander", because it is "object-oriented" software and thus, it is more simple to use.

Howerver, i created for my own use and for any one a statistical software named Econometrika https://archive.codeplex.com/?p=econometrika written in C#. So if you r advanced in programming in any language so you can create your own. there are many other languages u can use like the famous Python..... Best
Stata is taught in the University of Pittburgh and I find it work well with big data in terms of processing speed
Personally I recommend R, it's infinitely powerful as each day a new package is created. Furthermore, it's open source and totally free. It is worth noting that most students and researchers cannot afford to buy an SPSS, EVIEWS or STATA yearly licence.
I am coming in late to this question. I have taught using lots of different statistical software to non-major (mostly in biology related courses and some social science). These include Minitab, Excel, SPSS, and R, amongst a few other more specialised ones.
Personally, I have used R exclusively for about 10 years for all undergraduate and MSc level teaching for reasons of employability, open access, and reproducibility reasons. Students find it hard to program at first, but if you present it as if it (use of R; statistical methods in general) is not a poison chalice, I have found even the most intransigent students can succeed in using it. A common argument colleagues or students occasionally challenge the use of R for is that it is too hard to learn both programming AND statistics, but I have found it is just as hard for most students to learn to use other menu-driven software. The most important thing really is statistical thinking, justification of sample size, and other concepts; the software is just a tool (but it is hard to beat reproducibility and collaboration using R if students [and colleagues] engage with it).
SPSS is also used for teaching in the institution where I work, and remains very popular amongst researchers in social sciences and psychology, amongst other tatistical software I am sure. A niche program called Genstat (used in Agriculture) is also used in teaching here, which is very similar in capability and aesthetics to SPSS.
