People commonly use methanol, sometimes ethanol and acetonitile to elute microbial extracts from absorbent resin. Which solvent is better and why? What are the pros and cons?
I wouldn't say one is better than the other. It depends on the compound you are eluting; the solvents have somewhat different selectivity. The ethanol _might_ be able to elute less polar compounds that might be retained by methanol, but I'm not sure of that; otherwise the alcohols will have similar selectivities (ability to resolve closely eluting compounds). The best solvent really depends on the compounds to be eluted, and their resolution from closely eluting compounds.
