Hi. EMTP is well suited for analyzing power system transient phenomena such as system faults, sudden load changes, etc. I think PSCAD and EMTP both use FORTRAN compiler, though I recommend EMTP for fault simulation.
Nowadays Fortran is not an vogue and MATLAB Simulink will be highly helpful in all your analysis.
Inspite MATLAB -Simulink is good software I can recommend DIgSILENT as professional tool in time domain analysis for all type and standards in fault analysis.
EMTP, DIGSILENT and MATLAB/Simulink on performance basis.
It is workable to create required Model in EMTP and MATLAB /Simulink, if you have compact knowledge.
Analysis is Superior in EMTP.
Help is available at Math-works in case of MATLAB /Simulink.
DIGSILENT is more professional tool and gives more credibility to your results on tool's end.
So kindly find out a trade-off according to your needs, circumstances and available tools/facilities.
