I would suggest you to use NS-3 simulator in order to characterize the LTE-A scenario that you prefer and analysize the system performance in term of throughput and delay (i.e., ad you mentioned in your question).

From my experience, NS3 requires a steep learning attempt. However, NS3 offers you a great deep drive into the desired protocols. In addition, the community is large and there are plenty of available modules.
On the other hand, OPNET or now Riverbed can give you a very quick simulation setup. Great UI can offer you "no coding" simulation and graphical results. Those results are ready/near ready for publication. Free license is also available for academic use.
My preference is OPNET for the very quick simulation scenarios, performance evaluation and NS3 for new proposed algorithm/protocol.
