we have a list of yield/ ha for majority of the agricultural crops? are there any list for essential oils yield/ ha in the world? do you know which plants produce max?
I think Bursera delpechiana wood, berries, leaves, flowers etc. yield essential oils up to 10%. Bursera being a tree can yield large amounts of these plant parts, therefore high yields/ha. Sandalwood is another such tree. In India, C-4 aromatic grasses such as citronella (1.0% or higher essential oil yield), lemongrass (0.6-1.0% or higher essential oil yield), palmarosa (0.4-0.6% or higher essential oil yield) are reported to produce 300-400 kg essential oil/ha/year under experimental conditions. Farmers have reported yields of 120-150 kg/acre (1 ha = 2.5 acres) of palmarosa and lemongrass and 150-200 kg/acre of citronella.
It is a good idea to compile the essential oil yields of aromatic crops. As far as I know there are books on essential oil composition of several aromatic crops (B.M. Lawrence volumes), but no modern books on world aromatic crops. In India some authors have published cultivation details of major aromatic crops. Ernest Guenther published on world aromatic crops but the book is too old as new varieties and new techniques of cultivation and essential oil extraction are currently followed.
