Soil test calibration study enables researchers to determine the critical soil P concentrations or revise the P fertilizer recommendation for an area based on major soil type, i.e. soil texture (medium to fine and coarse), pH (acidic, neutral and alkaline) and soil moisture at the time of planting (dry, moist and wet).

Although on-farm trial is the widely used approach to carry out soil-test crop response P calibration studies, fixed plots are also used in some cases by creating gradient after depleting P for one or two seasons. But, creating the gradient through depletion of P is very difficult in many ways. On the other hand, conducting such studies enables researchers to find the fields with different P levels (e.g. low, medium, high).
