Imagine two OA journals: A: with IF of 5 (Q1) and APC of 3000 USD, B: IF of 4 (Q2) and APC of 1500 USD. Which one you prefer for publication if you have equal chance of acceptance?
APC is an important factor which majority of OA journals do not consider it. This is a common trend where an journal with higher IF charges authors higher APC compared with the journal of lower IF from the same publisher and the same editorial procedures. It is not good approach and I am wondering how OA publishers take such strategy!
Higher IF reflects higher citations per published paper each journal receives annually. But, IF calculation has some drawbacks and does not reflect homogeneous distributio.
I personally prefer lower APC even the journal is under Q2. whith 3000 USD you can publish two papers. If your paper has high quality it would receive the high citations. Other important factor is visibility of the journal. we have journals with low IF but have high visibility which in turn increases chance of citations.
