I think the Raspberry Pi has the best support and the most things easily available. I expect the most work will be interfacing things to the computer and that is where the Gertboard comes into its own. Form a coding point of view I don't expect to see much difference once their up an running.

It appears to me the Raspberry Pi B+ with a Gertboard is the easiest to interface and has the best support. The Gertborad has a reputation as easier to use than directly interfacing with a Linux computer. If it is for a few uses it is fine. But being a single source board I wouldn't make a long term produce using it.

I would make a prototype to find out what I needed because it has so many other features you can use.

If you work directly with hardware reading bits off hardware lines having a simple CPU such as a PIC or 68HC12 with assembler, C or FORTH worked best for me. But I had a lot of time invested in the 68HC11 reading 5V DC lines and setting FET and Transistors or turn things on and off. You can't get deterministic timing from a Linux or Windows OS and you can from the simple CPUs. I find comments about the Gurtboard have very little jitter that implies it has some.

For extra cameras you could use the USB interface or switch the camera port.

To get rid of latency or jitter you have to have a system that is never interrupted. That is really hard to do unless you can run your process and then do the communication.

in my research laboratory, we're working with Beaglebone Black for about 2 years.

I think it is particularly suited to what you should do; moreover you have to consider that most of arduino or raspberry sensors and components work perfectly on BBB.

I think in this case price is also a question. RaspPi is the cheapest one, but of course the least powerfull, BeagleBone Black as far as I saw now is still difficult to buy. I was using also Panda. All of them have nice support (of course RaspPi has the biggest).

From my experience I would use RaspPi (if you do not plan to make very complicated math or www) and bought as a expension EmbeddedPi board - it is based on stm32 and compatible with Arduino shelds. I believe Linux on RaspPi for data analyse and visualization + FreeRtos on stm32 for hard realtime tasks is the best solution

I am old fashioned but running Linux on on board that reads sensors and controls motors adds a great deal of overhead to a process that needs an OS that can get buy with at most one interrupt to take care of the process it is dedicated to run and let every thing else wain its turn in the queue. Many times all the I/O can be buffered and every thing run in a simple round-robin scheduling. As fast as computers are today just write fast code and let it wait its turn to run.

A 68HC11 with a 2 MHz ECLOCK could run and 4 cylinder engine to almost 200 miles per hour.

Rather than trying to move to an exact position, send the move to the motors and move on the next instruction. When the shaft encoder is read check the error adjust the next move for the next move. As long as as the error is OK keep trying to make it in bounds.

It is a lot simpler to run a simple CPUs for each process and send the data to a central commuter. Its a lot easier to make another  simple computer board than to keep adding to a complex one.
