NDWI is computed using the near-infrared (NIR – MODIS band 2) and the short wave infrared (SWIR – MODIS band 6) reflectance, while LSWI is calculated using the percentage reflected radiation in the NIR and red portions of the spectrum, that is to say, short wave infrared and red reflectances.

The NDVI is a measure of vegetation amount and condition. It is associated with vegetation canopy characteristics such as biomass, leaf area index and percentage of vegetation cover. The Land Surface Water Index (LSWI) uses the shortwave infrared (SWIR) and the NIR regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. There is strong light absorption by liquid water in the SWIR, and the LSWI is known to be sensitive to the total amount of liquid water in vegetation and its soil background.

Bachir Achour thanks for your answer. so according to your description LSWI can be calculated using MODIS SWIR and Red reflectance? mean band 6 and band 1 will be used for the calculation LSWI?

For LSWI use Bands 2 and 6.

Several studies used another SWIR band (1580 – 1750 nm) and NIR band (841-876 nm) to calculate the Land Surface Water Index (LSWI) [1], [2].

Bachir Achour I have gone through the above mentioned articles and I found that for NDWI calculation MODIS band 2 (860 nm) and band 5 (1240 nm) are used.

and for LSWI calculation MODIS band 2 (780-890 nm) and band (1580-1750 nm) are used.

so I want to ask are these combinations correct ????
