Surveying hard to reach groups can often be challenging. I haven't surveyed truck drivers, but I think as a general principle, snowball sampling can be effective. This works best if the initial group of collaborators are well respected by their fellow drivers as this encourages those that the initial group nominates, to respond.
Hi Walter, there is a german publication from the Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen (BAST) "M 204: Auswirkungen von Belastungen und Stress auf das Verkehrsverhalten von Lkw-Fahrern, Claudi Evers" (i think, she is working still at the BAST). She surveyed truck drivers and i am be shure that she is able to support your work. KR, Christian
Hello Walter, As a former cross country truck driver I can tell you these people get really bored and many would love the opportunity to contribute to more than just delivering goods. A day standing at the fuel pumps at a busy filling station handing out five to each driver would probably work well. Just remember, most of them will be interested if they believe they are contributing to something. Good luck.
@David: I am sceptical with snowball sampling. I have no idea about the generalizability of the results.
@Christian: Working myself for BASt a lot, I know this report. I am looking for alternatives and I am curious about the experiences of researchers worldwide.
@Rhonda: Thanks, good idea!
@Jusyna: Personal interviews on a sunday or saturday is a very good idea! We plan to survey truck drivers in a project regarding the job description of truck drivers and the future development of this job.
