I think ultimately you'll find this is the wrong question.  Personally, I favor the simplest method possible, then bring out the bigger guns as necessary.  For instance, how you set up your problem regarding the feature vector you'll find to be much more powerful (think data reduction).  None the less this is an amazing area, but in my opinion data will be king here, not the method.
