Do you know any lake on earth that is controlled by detachment fault.I studied Pearl River Mouth Basin, South China Sea. I found there are several detachment faults there and sediments accommodated on the fault plane.
In the Western US Great Basin I believe there are a number of Pluvial lakes, now ephemeral, in basins controlled by low-angle normal faults. Manly (Death Valley) and Dixie (Valley) are two I have published on, with seismic imaging of the faults and basins (with Pullammanappallil, Caskey, Abbott, Chavez-Perez). Amy Eisses wrote her UNR MS thesis on seismic imaging of Recent sedimentation in Pyramid Lake, which could also be controlled in the northern part by a normal fault, perhaps at low angle. We have a Geosphere paper in revision on that. It is notable that the lowest-angle normal faults are associated in these lakes with stepovers in strike-slip faults. Is that the situation in the Pearl River Mouth basins? I would love to look at some sections from the Pearl River Mouth- do you have a thesis or publication available?
Thanks, Prof. Louie. I think you are right. The Deth Valley is good candidate. However the detachement fault in Pearl River Mouth Basin is covered by thick sediments. I think it is different.
